The university essay arrived in March 2023 with a footnote no one had ever written before: "AI tools were used to assist with brainstorming." Three years on, that footnote has become a clause in academic integrity policies in nearly every major university and a quiet feature of how good students actually study. The honest reality is messier than either of the two loud camps suggest. ChatGPT is neither the end of education nor a magic study button. The third high-value study technique is the deliberate-confusion drill. Ask the model: "Pretend you are a confused student who has misunderstood this concept. Ask a reasoning model and you will get a working solution that shows steps. For mistakes you have made on a problem set, paste your working in and ask: "Where did I go wrong? Walk me through the right approach without giving me the final answer." That last clause is critical — without it, the model jumps to the answer and you learn nothing.
For coding courses, the model is a good study partner but a bad assignment-writer. The same advice as for essays applies: use it for explanation, debugging, and review, not for writing the submitted code.
