The shift from the textbook definition to the product definition matters because it changes what you should expect. The textbook definition admits any system that does an "intelligent" thing, including pure rule engines. The product definition restricts the field to learned systems, which behave differently from rule engines: they generalise, fail in characteristic ways, and improve when trained on more data rather than when their rules are rewritten.
What AI is not: it is not consciousness, sentience or understanding in the philosophical sense. - Narrow AI (ANI): performs a specific task at human level or above. Almost everything in production today.
- Artificial General Intelligence (AGI): can learn and perform any intellectual task a human can. The current research target.

The taxonomy is clean as a vocabulary and messy when you try to apply it. 1. Data collection and curation. A frontier model's pretraining corpus is on the order of trillions of tokens -- text scraped from the open web, books, academic papers, code repositories, conversation logs, and licensed datasets. The unsexy work of cleaning, deduplicating, and filtering this data is a major part of why some models perform better than others on the same architecture. A meaningful share of every model's behaviour is set by what was and was not in the training data.
2. Pretraining. The model is trained to predict the next token in a sequence, using all that data, on a cluster of thousands of GPUs running for weeks or months. The cost is in the hundreds of millions of dollars per frontier-tier run. The output is a "base model" -- a system that has absorbed an enormous amount of pattern from text but is not yet useful for instruction-following or conversation. Pretraining is what gives the model its breadth of competence.
3. Post-training. The base model is then refined to be useful, safe and instruction-following. The standard pipeline involves supervised fine-tuning on human-written examples, followed by reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF) and increasingly from AI feedback (RLAIF) and from constitution-style rules (Constitutional AI, Anthropic's approach). Where AI breaks
An honest account of where AI fails in 2026 is essential because the failure modes are non-obvious. They look unlike software bugs, and applying software-bug intuitions leads to nasty surprises.
Hallucination. Models confidently produce answers that are wrong, plausible-sounding, and presented in the same tone as their correct answers. Hallucination rates have fallen with retrieval-augmented generation and tool use, but they have not fallen to zero. Anywhere a wrong answer with the right tone is dangerous -- legal citations, medical recommendations, financial figures -- you need humans in the loop or hard-coded verification.

Junior roles in fields like copywriting, customer support and basic coding have shrunk visibly. Senior roles have expanded. Whether this is a temporary pattern or a permanent reshape is still being debated; the data so far supports neither extreme prediction.
Existential and catastrophic risk. A serious minority of AI researchers, including some of the people building the systems, argue that sufficiently capable AI poses catastrophic risks if its goals diverge from human ones. A different serious minority argues that this concern is misplaced or distracts from nearer-term harms. The disagreement is not resolved and probably cannot be without more evidence than we currently have.

Common myths about AI
The popular discourse around AI carries enough confusion that it is worth naming and addressing the most frequent misconceptions directly.
"AI is just autocomplete." True in the most reductive sense -- LLMs are trained on next-token prediction -- and misleading as a description of what they do. The same reductive logic would describe humans as "just chemistry" or chess as "just rule-following". The interesting properties (conversational coherence, useful generalisation, problem-solving) emerge at scale and are not present in any system small enough to be called "just autocomplete" without scare quotes.
"AI cannot be creative." Empirically false at this point, depending on what you mean by creative. AI systems produce novel combinations of patterns from their training data that, by most reasonable tests of creativity, qualify. They do struggle with sustained originality across a long work, with departing from their training distribution in goal-directed ways, and with the kind of genuine novelty that requires a lifetime of human experience. "Creative in some senses, not in others" is closer to the truth.
"AI is biased because it is woke / not woke enough." The political framing obscures the technical issue. Models inherit the patterns in their training data, which include both genuine biases (the social biases present in internet text) and deliberate post-training corrections (the refusal patterns labs add to manage harm). The product you interact with is the result of both forces and is rarely a neutral mirror of "what the data says". Reasonable people disagree about whether the corrections go far enough or too far; that disagreement is real and not resolvable by appealing to either neutrality or technical authority.
"AI will become sentient and turn on us." No serious researcher in 2026 is worried about this in the science-fiction form. The serious AI-risk concerns are about misalignment of goals (a system optimising for a stated objective in unintended ways), about misuse (humans deploying AI to harm other humans more efficiently), and about concentration of power (a few well-capitalised players controlling a transformative technology). These concerns are real and underdeveloped. The "Skynet" framing is not.
"AI will plateau soon." Possibly true in some directions, false in others. Pretraining-only scaling has shown signs of plateauing on certain benchmarks. Post-training (reasoning models, agentic scaffolding, tool use) has continued to deliver gains. The 2024-2026 evidence is that capability progress has slowed in some directions and accelerated in others. Anyone confidently telling you the rate of progress is either accelerating or plateauing without specifying which axis is making a stronger claim than the data supports.
"AI is a bubble." The infrastructure investments, the inference cost reductions, and the deployed economic value all suggest the technology will outlive the current valuation cycle. Whether specific companies are overvalued is a separate question; the underlying technology is real and economically integrated in a way the dotcom era was not by 2001. A correction in valuations is plausible. A return to the 2021 status quo is not.
"You don't need to learn AI -- it will be a feature in everything." True at the level of "you don't need to know HTML to use the web". False at the level of "you don't need to know AI to be effective at your job". The people who are getting the most out of AI in 2026 are people who learned how to think with it, the same way the people who got the most out of personal computers in 1995 were people who learned how to think with them. The integration into other tools is real but does not eliminate the leverage of being directly fluent.
How to start using AI usefully
If you are reading this because you want to actually use AI in your work, the practical advice in 2026 has settled into a few patterns.
Pick one tool and learn it well. The marginal value of a fifth chatbot subscription is much smaller than the marginal value of being good at the one you already have. ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini are all capable enough at the consumer tier that the choice between them matters less than your skill at using them.

Treat the model as a fast junior collaborator, not an oracle. Models produce excellent first drafts, plausible second opinions, and useful summaries. They produce unreliable final answers in domains where being wrong is costly. The mental model that fits the 2026 reality is "fast, cheap junior with broad knowledge and uneven judgement" -- which is exactly how you would use a junior team member.
Verify anything that matters. The cost of verification is usually low (read the output, check a citation, run the code). The cost of acting on a confident-sounding wrong answer can be high. Build verification into your workflow and you eliminate most of the failure modes that scare people about AI.
